Friendship albums were like the Victorian era’s Facebook! These scrapbook-style items were used to both express creativity and stay connected—friends would paint, sketch, and write poetry or letters inside. During the 1800s, many Philadelphians, including members of the city’s free black community, kept friendship albums, some of which survive today.
