Children in Poltergeist are particularly sought out by the restless spirits. Carol Anne (pictured above communicating with Kane) is receptive to paranormal communication. This ability is revealed in the first Poltergeist, in her now iconic scene in which she sits mesmerized in front of a flickering TV and communicates with the spirits, who use the device as a portal to the world of the living. Carol Anne's angelic appearance and presumed innocence ironically make her the prime target of the evil ghosts. In Poltergeist and many similar horror films, this innocence is shown to place children in closer contact with the natural world. Unfortunately, that world is rife with chaos and danger, as Carol Anne's family soon finds out.
