Poltergeist (videorecording), 1982
For all surface appearances a ghost story, the Poltergeist trilogy explores the dark undercurrents of consumerism and excess. After the Freelings' newly built suburban tract house is oddly beset by hauntings, they discover it was built on the site of a cemetery. The graves were recklessly disturbed, angering the spirits. They soon learn that modern technology and conveniences cannot suppress the natural world -- it will resurface, in unexpected and undesirable ways.
