Video: Poltergeist III (1988) - Movie Trailer
Once again, modern constructions provide no protection from the dark spirit world. In Poltergeist III, Carol Anne has moved to Chicago to live with her aunt and uncle in a newly-built luxury high-rise. She is visited again by the evil ghost Kane, who appears while she is playing with her Speak & Spell. It is almost as though he is summoned by the device. As his malevolent energy takes over the building, it causes the HVAC system to go haywire, encasing corriders in ice and perplexing the building's maintenance crew.
As in the first two installments of Poltergeist, technology is capable of enriching and entertaining, but also of invoking evil. The anxiety that began in the post-war era over the role of technology in our lives became evident by the 1980s. Horror movies that personify and demonize technology ask two important questions: (1) Has technological innovation outpaced the capacity for humans to adapt? and (2) Do we control technology, or has it begun to control us?
