The Anubis gates by Tim Powers, c1983

Reviewed by BookList: A modern authority on the romantic poets leads a tour of time travelers back to 1810 and becomes involved with gypsies, sorcerers, and a variety of other characters. Pacing, characterization, and treatment of both the time travel and the systems of magic are above average; and the use of historical detail provides emotional impact and a general tone of gritty realism. Powers' first novel, The Drawing of the Dark, displayed his potential as a master of historically based fantasy; this volume confirms his status. Highly recommended. ((Reviewed January 1, 1985))
