On Death and Dying: The Bed in Othello at the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre
Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.
The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre: 2111 Sansom Street
Dr. Kristin Poole discusses her essay, “The Bed in Othello,” and explores the spiritual environment of Shakespeare’s England. Dr Poole explores the art of dying, or “ars moriendi,” and the special place people went to die—their beds. It was here that spirits good and bad appeared vying for the soul of the dying person—and where people believed that the devil and God came to fight for the soul of the new recruit—a place where you could lay and wait and “watch the performance.” Tickets are $20.
