Built in 1599, the first Globe theatre lasted until 1613. It burned to the ground during a performance of "Henry VIII." The theatre was quickly rebuilt and remained the home of the Shakespeare Company until 1642 when all theatres were closed under England’s Puritan administration. The current Globe Theatre stands a few hundred yards from its original site. The rebuilding of the iconic building stems from the founding of the Shakespeare's Globe Trust by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker. -- www.shakespearesglobe.com
