Initial Q, beginning Psalm 51

This initial Q begins Psalm 51, "Quid gloriaris in malicia qui potens est iniquitat..." (Why dost thou glory in malice, thou that art mighty in iniquity?). In the initial, a saint confronts a devil, demonstrating the first verse of the psalm. The devil's face has been rubbed away in an act of defamation by a devout reader. The abstracted vegetal motifs in the border decoration are characteristic of a group of manuscripts produced in the Ghent-Bruges region of Flanders, or modern-day Belgium. This group has been identified by scholars as the "Tweede" group based on shared stylistic affinities.

This manuscript has been dated to ca. 1270.
