Karen Russell | Vampires in the Lemon Grove with Claire Vaye Watkins | Battleborn and Amity Gaige | Schroder
Listen to MP3 audio
Karen Russell's debut novel Swamplandia!, a lushly imagined narrative of a dilapidated, family-run amusement park in the Everglades, was a New York Times Best Book of the Year, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and a nominee for the Orange Prize. Her new book, Vampires in the Lemon Grove is a volume of sinister stories that delightfully cross horror with magical realism.
Claire Vaye Watkins’s stories and essays have appeared in Granta, One Story, The Paris Review, Ploughshares, and Glimmer Train. An assistant professor at Bucknell University, she is co-director of the Mojave School. The stories in her collection Battleborn are “as blistering hot and wondrously expansive as the gritty, wide-open Nevada desert” (Donald Ray Pollock).
Amity Gaige’s first novel, O My Darling was an unsentimental tale of secular marriage that unfolded “gently and beautifully… like a gauzy curtain in an open window” (Los Angeles Times). Honored as one of the 5 Under 35 outstanding emerging novelists by the National Book Foundation, she is the recipient of Fulbright and McDowell Colony fellowships. Her new novel, Schroder follows the tragic course of a young East German immigrant’s white lie.
